100 Most Influential Cultural Items in My Life

A list of the 100 most important cultural items in my life to date. It’s focused more on items that are consumed/experienced. I’d like to think that each of these helped to evolve something special in who I am as a person, though I’m sure some are just things I really like a lot. If you would like an explanation as to why something is listed on here, please ask and I’ll write up the impact. Presented chronologically: Barney and Friends The Holy Bible Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs  Disney’s… Read more 100 Most Influential Cultural Items in My Life

In Memorium

I’ve never had to do this before and typically I’m not the sincerest person, but I felt this needed to be shared. In honor of my Grandpa Wilson, who passed away last Saturday afternoon. My Grandpa was an old school gentleman. He worked hard and knew his neighbors well, helping them out and conversing with them daily as he worked on his garden. He loved his wife and his family, providing for them, but instilling in them what it meant to work. He never paid for what he didn’t have… Read more In Memorium

2016 Pop Culture Goals

I think after mostly failing at my goals from last year I am feeling uninspired to create new ones. There are the general broad goals, which I feel inspired to do every year in a fit of New Year’s dream projection: read Infinite Jest, finish Mad Men, listen through the 1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die list, etc… I would love to do those things, but don’t feel like they are worth guilting myself into doing. I was able to come up with two goals for this year, one practical and one… Read more 2016 Pop Culture Goals

Top 10 Essays of 2015

I didn’t keep up with as much online reading as I wanted to toward the end of this year, but here is a list of the ten best essays I read online this year. These are obviously biased toward my own opinions and interests–focused on culture (both popular and globally), the absurd, and ways of thinking about things I had never thought about. Most of all, I find these challenging and extremely well-written. Enjoy and feel free to comment with your own. 10. “You’re Killing Us Smalls, The Only Sandlot… Read more Top 10 Essays of 2015

Top 100 Songs of 2015 (Part IV: 25-1)

25.Rae Sremmurd “No Flex Zone” 24. Chvrches “Empty Threat” This is probably the easiest song to do a stupid dance to that came out all year, as soon as the chorus hits I dare you to defy the dance-spiration. 23. Wavves, Cloud Nothings “Come Down” 22. Rihanna “B*tch Better Have My Money” Rihanna has evolved from pop star writer, to pop star, to bona fide Queen status. Her work is on this braggadocio anti-hero track that is so much more exciting than the star who makes music based on the… Read more Top 100 Songs of 2015 (Part IV: 25-1)

Top 100 Songs of 2015 (Part III: 50-26)

50. Grimes w/Janelle Monae “Venus Fly” 49. Best Coast “Heaven Sent” Best Coast is at her best when singing simple songs. “Heaven Sent” evokes a sweet innocence that radiates all throughout this track about love. 48. Demi Lovato “Stone Cold” As far as big heart-wrenching ballads go I think hands down this is a better version of Adele’s “Hello”. Lovato flexes those pipes here and it really pays off. 47. Torres “New Skin” 46. Carly Rae Jepsen “I Really Like You” 45. Screaming Females “Wishing Well” 44. Justin Bieber “What… Read more Top 100 Songs of 2015 (Part III: 50-26)

Best of 2015: A Schedule

My first best of the year piece will be released tomorrow morning, but for now a placeholder for all of the content I hope to deliver over the next month. I usually try to wait until the year is mostly over before declaring the year’s best, but gee is it too much fun. Here’s what I’ve got coming your way this end of the year season*. *All dates are tentative, dependent on my personal work ethic. Dec. 1 – Top 10 Pop Hits Dec. 8 – Top 100 Songs (Part… Read more Best of 2015: A Schedule
